The History of Fairmont Sonoma
The History
OF FAIRMONT SONOMA MISSION INN & SPA
The first to discover the underground hot springs beneath our iconic resort were the local Native American tribes, who regarded the waters as sacred and healing. In 1840, San Francisco physician T.M. Leavenworth heard of the geothermal waters’ reputed powers and established a small health resort on the site. In 1883, Captain H.E. Boyes purchased the property and built the Boyes Hot Springs hotel, which opened in 1902, welcoming San Francisco’s wealthiest to "take the waters" at Northern California’s premier hot springs resort. The modern hotel featured electric lights, running water, moving pictures, and a glass-enclosed swimming pool, creating the world’s largest mineral tank.
Historic 1927 Postcard
Historic 1927 Postcard
The hotel was tragically destroyed by a fire in 1923, but, like a phoenix from the ashes, it re-emerged in August 1927, reopening as Sonoma Mission Inn. The Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, inspired by the Missions throughout the Golden State, featured red-tile roofs and a salmon-hued stucco façade, both of which remain today. The construction of a water tower by the main swimming pool ensured that a catastrophe like this would not happen again.
In 1980, after investing millions in renovations, the owners enlisted the late John Dickinson, a famed San Francisco interior designer, to design the award-winning décor. The 1981 addition of a multimillion-dollar spa and innovative gourmet meals soon attracted international clientele and heralded the beginning of “Spa Cuisine.”
In 1993, a new source of underground hot springs was discovered: thermal mineral waters 1,100 ft. directly beneath the resort, with temperatures up to 135 degrees. The Inn became the only luxury resort in the Western United States with natural, hot artesian mineral water. Along with its partnership with the nearby Sonoma Golf Club, Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa became the only complete destination resort experience in the Sonoma Wine Country.
In 2002, the resort joined the world-renowned Fairmont Hotels & Resorts family, alongside legendary hotels such as Fairmont San Francisco, Fairmont Banff Springs, and The Savoy in London. In 2014, Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa became a member of Historic Hotels of America.
Although the Inn has undergone several renovations, the original buildings remain intact. The legendary resort is where the natural beauty of Sonoma’s famed wine country meets the healing power of geothermal springs, offering an unparalleled experience of tranquility and rejuvenation.

The Fairmont Story: The Birth of a Legend
The Fairmont StoryTHE BIRTH OF A LEGEND
In 1907, history was made when Fairmont San Francisco, Nob Hill’s grand dame, opened its doors. The iconic hotel soon became the city’s venue of choice for glittering balls, presidential visits, and political gatherings, making the name Fairmont synonymous with “place of occasion.” With this auspicious beginning, the Fairmont Hotels & Resorts brand was born.
THE CREATION OF AN ICONIC LEGACY
The distinctive collection of unrivaled hotels under the Fairmont banner reflects our belief in delivering world-class service to guests who appreciate unique locations. Today, when you think of a landmark hotel around the world, it's likely a Fairmont Hotel. From The Savoy in the heart of London to Fairmont Peace Hotel in Shanghai and Makkah Clock Royal Tower, A Fairmont Hotel, our portfolio features the most celebrated addresses. Whether in the heart of capital cities or on the oceanfront, such as in the Maldives, we continue to uphold our legacy of providing unforgettable experiences to our treasured guests.
LUXURIOUS ACCOMMODATIONS IN THE MOST SOUGHT-AFTER DESTINATIONS
Fairmont Hotels offer more than luxurious rooms, world-class dining and amazing locations; they help guests create lasting memories. Perhaps this is why so many celebrities, royals, politicians and artists have made their favorite Fairmont hotel their home away from home.
Claude Monet painted evocative scenes of London during several visits to The Savoy. In fact, scientists have pinpointed which balconies he painted from by analyzing the lighting in his canvases (rooms 610 and 611 in 1900 and rooms 510 and 511 in 1901). Noël Coward recovered from the flu and finished his comedy Private Lives in the penthouse of Fairmont Peace Hotel in Shanghai. And the roster of Hollywood’s A-list celebrities is endless.
Our hotels have played starring roles in historic events. The UN Charter was drafted and signed by 50 countries in the Garden Room of Fairmont San Francisco. William Lyon Mackenzie King hosted Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt at Fairmont Le Château in 1943, as the two men drew up plans for the Normandy invasion of Europe. Lennon and Yoko Ono made history with their Bed-in for Peace at Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth in Montreal in 1969, when the former Beatle penned the lyrics and recorded “Give Peace a Chance,” which became the anthem of the anti-war movement.
Favored by royalty, Queen Elizabeth II visited our iconic hotels in every decade of her reign. We’ve also welcomed local notables to their debutante balls, hosting countless afternoon tea dances and lavish galas. Whether it’s a headline-making event or an outpost for the code-breaking headquarters of British Intelligence in Bermuda, our goal is to deliver an exceptional experience to every guest.

Welcome from Our Chief Concierge
Welcome from OUR CHIEF CONCIERGEGreetings from our concierge desk and a very warm wine country welcome to our beautiful Sonoma Valley and the historic, nearly 100-year-old Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn and Spa. As I write this, I am accompanied by our Director of Pet Relations, Chardonnay, a nine-year-old English Cream Golden. As the hotel's mascot, Chardonnay is prompt for her duties and welcomes every stroke and selfie each day between 9-11 am and 2-4 pm.
Becoming a concierge was a great decision, as it gave me a way to share my passion for this incredible valley with visitors from around the world.
I immigrated to the States from the UK, I have two beautiful daughters, and when I sneak out of my parental duties, you would often find me exploring Sonoma and Napa Valley.
Once my younger daughter moved to college, I found myself toying with how to reinvent my new ‘empty nest’ and knew that I could focus on sharing my love of the wine country. As a new concierge, I quickly learned that success came from creating truly personalized itineraries that match guest interests, and I fell in love with the role. Whether you’re sipping your welcome bubbles, starting on a glass of your complimentary bottle of Highway 12 wine, or brewing a cup of tea from your room’s beverage station, please settle in and allow me to share with you some of my best Sonoma Valley insights. From restaurants and wineries to the Great Outdoors, discover the best places to eat, sip, and explore. Additionally, we are home to the wonderful restaurant Sante, which offers two inspiring breakfast and dinner menus with a focus on fresh, locally sourced produce.
TRANSPORT
To explore wine country, we highly recommend that you plan transportation in advance, and we have many different options for you to consider. To get to Sonoma Plaza from our hotel, our Valet team is pleased to offer complimentary rides to and from the Plaza every day between 2 pm and 10 pm. Alternatively, we can help you book local drivers or Sonoma Taxi so you can explore a little further. Guests are also invited to take our complimentary road bicycles along the local bike path—once. Sonoma’s original railroad track—which offers a pleasant 6-mile round-trip ride to and from downtown. Some wineries surrounding the Plaza you can visit include Sebastiani, Bartholomew Estate Winery, Gundlach Bundschu, and Buena Vista, the oldest winery in California. Lastly, the more adventurous bikers can rent our E-bikes to explore further-afield wineries such as Sangiacomo, a third-generation family business, Donum Estate, with vast sculptures, Artesa’s lovely Spanish-inspired architecture, and Cuvaison with their new waterfront wine-tasting Boathouses. Around these wineries, catch the locals at Lou’s Luncheonette for their famous fried chicken sandwiches!
DINING
We are fortunate to be located close to several world-class dining establishments, offering guests ample ways to experience California’s best produce and cooking talents. Many of the area’s renowned restaurants surround the Sonoma Plaza, including The Girl and The Fig, El Dorado Kitchen, Valley, Wit and Wisdom, Sonoma Grille, and La Salette. We also have a number of new restaurants in our valley, such as Stella, Golden Bear Station, Valley Swim Club, Songbird Parlour, and Enclos Sonoma. The latter showcases produce from its farm, and Executive Chef Brian recently received a Two Michelin-Star rating for his multi-course feast and wine pairing options.
WINE
Back at the plaza, you will find approximately two dozen tasting rooms, a distillery, wine bars, plus chocolate and ice cream shops. Fun fact: here you will find the original William Sonoma Store! A few favorite tasting rooms at the plaza include Three Sticks, situated in the magical 1842 Vallejo Casteñada Adobe, now also known for its scrumptious caviar tastings as well as its wine.
Over at Pangloss Cellars, sip wine in their chic stone-walled tasting room and indulge in ordering their charcuterie boards. Visit our friends at Sojourn Cellars at their charming tasting salon for a memorable comparative wine tasting. Don’t forget to take your complimentary Highway 12 tasting voucher found in your room so you can enjoy a tasting courtesy of our friends at their quaint red barn. Stop by Kamen tasting rooms to enjoy my favorite Lava Block Cabernet from local owner and famous Karate Kid screenwriter, Robert Kamen.
Many wineries on our valley floor have opened their tasting rooms and vineyards for walk-in bar appointments. Stop by our concierge desk so our team can provide you with a map and discounted wine-tasting coupons for a more relaxed itinerary. For small group wine tours, consider Platypus or Sonoma Wine Trolley, both make stops to pick up our guests daily by appointment.
Looking for some beautiful hilltop boutique wineries and firm itineraries? We are delighted to assist in making reservations to turn those wine dreams into reality. These small production wineries produce delicious wines with amazing hospitality and views of Bennet Valley and Moon Mountain; Coursey Graves French-inspired gardens and panoramic vistas, Kamen Sky Deck chef’s pairing at Robert Kamen’s private mountain vineyard, B. Wise ridgetop estate cave aging tunnels
and alcoves, and Repris natural rock caves and organic farming practices, complete with an ATV ride, are some of my all-time favorites.
Curious to taste with a winemaker? Learn all things tannins with Scottish winemaker Steve Law and his Labrador at his Maclaren cottage. Up the road, find Hungarian winemaker, Csaba, often pouring in his bougie-tasting lounge, En Garde. Visit Ty Caton’s tasting room for Ty’s inaugural 2003 vintage award winning Titanium. Laugh with Peter’s UK wit in his intimate backyard barn tasting at Peter Cellars. Learn about the wine-making process at Chris Loxton’s production pad - tours happen every day at 10:30 am.
Ready to indulge in food and wine pairings? It’s all the rage as it’s a wonderful way to enhance the flavors, textures, and qualities of the food. Sonoma Valley has numerous food and wine pairing experiences, from small bites to five-course meals. Some of my favorites include Hamel for a memorable experience from Chef Thomas, the recent title holder of the best young chef in the world! The award-winning food and wine pairing at St. Francis is not to be missed. Ram’s Gate is another winery offering refined elegance and artisanal craftsmanship. For foodies, join one of Sonoma’s Food and Wine Tours, take an Epicurean cheese-making class, enjoy olive oil tastings at Jacuzzi winery’s The Olive Press, and visit the historical Vella Cheese Company. Pushpak Motors is a great way to discover the beauty and history of Sonoma on their electric trikes with a routine stop at Vella.
and early for a spectacular sunrise hot air balloon experience, while Sonoma Valley Trail rides offer horseback riding through the vineyards at Bartholomew Estate Park.
Traveling as a family? Fortunately, plenty of the local wine experiences take into account parents with little ones. There is a Biodynamic tractor tour at Benziger winery, a duck pond and missionary museum at Cline Wineries, and goats, sheep, and labradors at Larson Family Winery. More family-friendly fun can be found at Charlie’s Acres local animal sanctuary and Safari West.
Looking to relax? Kick back, and chill in our 40,000 square foot Fairmont Spa, which offers beautifully curated spa experiences in complete tandem with nature. I would highly recommend checking out the spa packages for an array of rejuvenating services designed to restore health and well-being.
Come and visit us in the lobby or dial extension 2407 from your room to discuss your wine country vacation itinerary. Our goal is to curate the perfect experience, especially for you.
Cheers!

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES
I recommend visitors take advantage of the warm weather and seemingly endless sunshine and get out to explore Sonoma County’s exceptional nature. Hikers will be delighted with some wonderful options near the hotel. Our hiking leaders take guests every weekend to Jack London State Park, the site of the 2,000-year-old “Grandmother” redwood tree as well as Jack London’s Sonoma homestead. Our leaders also take guests to the Sonoma Overlook Trail for gorgeous Sonoma town views. Furthermore, guests are encouraged to visit the Sonoma Botanical Garden for their impressive Californian and Asian plants, Bartholomew Estate Park for their 3-mile vineyard trails, and Sugarloaf Ridge for its seasonal waterfall.

Fairmont Hotels & Resorts around the world, including Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa, have proudly maintained a long-standing partnership with the Make-A-Wish Foundation. During the holidays, several Fairmont properties invite Wish Kids to “flip the switch” to light the trees at their tree-lighting ceremonies, bringing communities together to shine a light on this incredible cause. Fairmont Sonoma partners with local wineries to spread holiday cheer through our Trees of Hope campaign, and our local Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area Chapter grants life-changing wishes to children with critical illnesses.
Together with generous donors, supporters, staff, and volunteers, Make-A-Wish delivers hope and joy to children and their families when they need it most. Make-A-Wish does not receive annual government funding. While in-kind donations provide a portion of funding for wishes, most mission delivery costs are covered by financial contributions from individual donors. In addition to donating, there are many other ways to help grant life-changing wishes, including volunteering, fundraising, donating airline miles, and more. To learn more and get involved, visit wish.org/greaterbay. Thank you.

Wine Country Living
WINE COUNTRY LIVINGDiscovering the Best of Sonoma Valley
Long before it became synonymous with fine wine, Sonoma Valley was known simply as a place apart, a stretch of land tucked between two mountain ranges where the light falls a little softer and the pace of life slows to match the seasons of the vine. Locals and old maps alike have long called it the Valley of the Moon, a name said to derive from the way moonlight seems to rise repeatedly over the surrounding peaks as it travels the length of the valley floor. Whatever its origin, the name captures something true about this place: it is a landscape that rewards those who linger.
For visitors staying in the area, Sonoma Valley offers an invitation rather than an itinerary. There is no single way to experience wine country here; it's a series of unhurried pleasures, from a walk between the vine rows at golden hour to an afternoon at a shaded table with a glass of something local. This region is built for wandering.
A VALLEY SHAPED BY ITS LANDSCAPE
Bordered by mountains on either side, Sonoma Valley's geography does much of the work of defining its character. The flat, fertile valley floor gives way to hillsides dotted with ancient oaks, their gnarled silhouettes as much a part of the scenery as the vineyards themselves. Morning fog often rolls in from the coast and burns off by midday, leaving behind warm, golden afternoons that mellow into cool evenings. It's a daily rhythm that shapes not only the grapes grown here but also the pace of life for everyone who calls the valley home.
Unlike flatter agricultural regions, this valley rewards a slower pace of exploration. Backroads wind past century-old barns and stone walls built by hand generations ago. Ridge lines offer views that stretch for miles on a clear day, and small pull-offs along quiet lanes make it easy to stop, breathe in the scent of warm earth and eucalyptus, and simply take in the view.
LIFE AMONG THE VINES
To understand Sonoma Valley is to understand its relationship with the growing season. Spring brings bud break, when tiny green shoots emerge along bare vines almost overnight, painting the hillsides with fresh color. Summer is a season of quiet growth, as grape clusters swell in the warm air and vineyard crews walk the rows, tending the canopy and fruit. By late summer and into fall, the valley shifts into harvest, often called crush, when the pace quickens and the scent of fermenting grapes drifts through the air in the early morning.
Visitors who time their trips around harvest season are treated to a particularly lively version of the valley, with roadside stands overflowing with produce and palpable anticipation in the air. But every season has its charm, even the quiet, bare vines of winter.

VILLAGE LIFE IN GLEN ELLEN AND KENWOOD
Beyond the main town, Sonoma Valley is dotted with small villages, each with its own distinct personality. Glen Ellen, tucked along a shaded creek, has long attracted writers and wanderers drawn to its rustic charm and slower rhythm. Wooden footbridges, tree-canopied lanes, and a scattering of historic cottages give the village a storybook quality that feels worlds away from city life. Just up the road, Kenwood offers a quieter, more pastoral version of valley living, surrounded by vineyards on nearly every side. Here, the landscape takes center stage, with rolling hills and distant mountain views that make it easy to understand why so many visitors describe their first glimpse of the valley as a homecoming.
WINE Boutique Winery, Cool-Climate Wines Handcrafting low-alcohol, food-friendly wines sourced from the premier vineyards in Sonoma County's Russian River Valley. Tastings by appointment with Winemaker Steve Law. SCAN TO BOOK NOW THE RITUAL OF TASTING Wine tasting in Sonoma Valley is less a transaction than a ritual. Most tasting experiences begin with a conversation, touching on the land, the season, and the quirks of a given vintage, before a single glass is poured. Guests are encouraged to slow down, notice how a wine changes as it opens in the glass, and ask questions freely. It is an experience rooted in curiosity rather than expertise, welcoming newcomers and lifelong enthusiasts alike. Food plays an equally important role. Many tasting experiences center on seasonal small bites designed to highlight, rather than overpower, the wine in the glass: a bit of aged cheese with a bright white, perhaps, or a savory tart alongside a bold red. The result is less about any single wine and more about the sense of place a good glass can evoke, from sun-warmed soil to quiet hillsides to the character of a valley that has been perfecting this craft for well over a century. A LIVING LEGACY
Sonoma Valley's identity has always been as much tied to its storytellers as to its soil. The rustic hills above Glen Ellen once inspired novels and adventure tales by writers captivated by the valley's wild beauty. The historic ranch lands they called home are now preserved as parkland, open for visitors to explore on foot. Wandering these trails today, past old stone ruins and beneath towering oaks, offers a tangible connection to the generations who found inspiration in this same landscape long before the first modern vineyard was planted. In Sonoma Valley, wine is merely the beginning of the story. The landscape itself lingers.
PLANNING A SLOWER KIND OF VISIT
The best way to experience Sonoma Valley is without a rigid plan. Set aside an afternoon to explore back roads with no particular destination in mind, and visit during the shoulder seasons, when crowds thin and the hillsides take on softer, golden hues. Above all, leave room for spontaneity. A scenic overlook or an unplanned stop is often what visitors remember most.
Whether it's a single afternoon or an extended stay, Sonoma Valley rewards travelers who slow down and let the landscape set the pace, still governed by the seasons, the soil, and the simple pleasure of a well-poured glass shared among friends.

The Art of Wellness
Sonoma's Natural Path to Relaxation
Long before Sonoma Valley became known for its vineyards, it was known for something else: its waters. Beneath the valley floor lies a network of natural hot springs, formed by the same volcanic activity that shaped the region's fertile soils.
For more than a century, travelers have made their way here not for wine, but for the simple, restorative pleasure of soaking in mineral-rich waters under the open sky. That legacy of wellness has never faded; it has simply evolved. Today, Sonoma Valley remains a place where relaxation is treated as seriously as viticulture, and its wellness culture draws on both the land's natural resources and a broader, more modern understanding of what it truly means to rest.
WATERS FROM THE EARTH
The geothermal springs that first drew visitors to this valley were formed by ancient volcanic activity, which left behind mineral deposits that early visitors believed had healing properties. Rich in natural minerals, the warm waters became the foundation for a wellness tradition that predates the region's now-famous vineyards by decades. Even now, the valley's volcanic geology continues to shape its identity, not only in the mineral springs that first put the region on the map but also in the soil that nourishes everything from vineyards to lavender fields. It is a rare landscape where geology and well-being are deeply intertwined.
Sonoma Valley remains a place where relaxation is treated as seriously as viticulture...
TRADITIONAL RESTORATIVE SPA CULTURE
Spa culture in Sonoma Valley draws heavily on this mineral-rich heritage. Treatments inspired by the region's volcanic soil are common, ranging from warming mud wraps to mineral soaks designed to ease tension after a day of hiking or cycling along the valley's quiet roads. Many spa menus also feature seasonal botanicals, including lavender, rosemary, and citrus grown just beyond the treatment room windows.
What sets the valley's approach to wellness apart is its emphasis on unhurried ritual. Treatments are rarely rushed, and many spas encourage guests to extend their visit with quiet time in a sauna, steam room, or heated outdoor pool before or after a treatment. The goal is not simply to check off a spa day but to build in enough stillness that relaxation has time to take hold. Here, wellness isn't an afternoon appointment. It's a philosophy woven into the rhythm of daily life.
WELLNESS IN THE OPEN AIR
For many visitors, the valley's greatest wellness resource is simply its landscape. Gentle hiking trails wind through oak woodlands and along ridge lines, offering sweeping valley views and a form of movement that feels more restorative than strenuous. Cyclists, too, find the valley's quiet back roads ideal for unhurried rides past vineyards and pasture land, with mountain views providing a natural backdrop for the entire route. Outdoor yoga and meditation sessions have also become a popular way to experience the valley, often held at sunrise or sunset, when the light is softest and the air carries the scent of warm earth. Practicing beneath the open sky, with vineyard rows stretching toward the mountains on either side, adds a sense of scale and stillness that's difficult to replicate indoors. Even a simple walk here can feel like a wellness practice. The valley's combination of clean air, mild climate, and unhurried scenery makes it easy to slow the mind, a form of restoration that costs nothing and requires no appointment.
MINDFUL, SEASONAL LIVING
Wellness in Sonoma Valley extends well beyond the spa or the trail. It shows in the way people eat, gather, and mark the passage of time. Meals here tend to follow the rhythm of the harvest, with menus shifting to reflect what is freshest each week. Eating this way, closely tied to the land and the seasons, has its own quiet, grounding effect.
This seasonal awareness extends into daily life more broadly. Locals speak of the valley's changing light, shifting morning fog, and subtle temperature swings, the way other communities might discuss changing fashions, as something to notice and appreciate rather than simply endure. For visitors accustomed to a faster pace elsewhere, adopting even a few days of this rhythm can feel like its own form of therapy.
A VALLEY BUILT FOR REST
What makes Sonoma Valley's wellness tradition so enduring is its foundation in something real: mineral-rich waters, volcanic soil, and a climate that seems designed to slow down. Long after the first visitors soaked in its springs, the valley continues to offer a version of rest that feels both ancient and, somehow, exactly what modern life often lacks.
Whether through a quiet soak, a sunrise hike, or simply an unhurried afternoon spent outdoors, Sonoma Valley invites visitors to treat relaxation not as an indulgence but as a practice worth returning to.
Even a simple walk here can feel like a wellness practice in itself.
From Left to Right: Marc, Brandon, Sarah, Catherine, and Scott Heller Luxury is Redefined at Heller Jewelers Luxury has never been one-size-fits-all. It's about the personal moments—the ones you celebrate, the ones you create, and the ones you carry with you forever. For almost 30 years, Heller Jewelers has built its reputation on a simple truth: the most meaningful designs feel like they were made just for you.
When you step into the showroom, there's an unmistakable warmth that sets Heller Jewelers apart. The lighting is soft, the cases glistening and inviting, and the atmosphere feels calm and welcoming. This attention to detail is no coincidence. It stems from the dedication of three generations of the Heller family—Scott and Catherine, along with Sarah, Brandon, and Marc—who offer each guest a level of warmth and sincerity that reflects their family’s legacy. Clients don't just leave with an item —they leave with a story they helped create. For generations of Bay Area families, Heller Jewelers has been a part of life’s most meaningful moments. The engagement ring. The anniversary gift. The birthday memory. The graduation timepiece. The "just because" sparkle that makes an ordinary day feel special. Many clients return to resize a ring, add an engraving to mark a new milestone, or help their children choose their first meaningful piece. It’s a full-circle experience, rooted in trust and shared history. At Heller Jewelers, luxury becomes deeply personal through the art of custom design. Whether it's transforming heirloom stones into something new or creating an engagement ring from a sketch on a napkin, the design process with our experts is collaborative, thoughtful, and rooted in your unique journey. Every carat, every setting, every choice of metal says something. Your ring reflects your love story. Your necklace celebrates your milestone. Your bracelet captures the moment you want to remember forever. As Scott Heller often says, "Jewelry is how we mark the moments that matter. Being part of our client's special moments is an honor." Over three decades, the Heller family has built more than a store—they've built relationships. Their legacy is not just craftsmanship. It's care. It's connection. It's the belief that luxury should always feel personal, thoughtful, and deeply meaningful. The Heller family invites you to visit their showroom located at City Center Bishop Ranch, where you can experience luxury, the Heller way.

A Toast to Local Shopping
A TOAST TO LOCAL SHOPPING
Sonoma's Artisan Makers
Sonoma Valley's reputation may rest on its vineyards, but a few steps beyond any tasting room reveals a second, quieter tradition: a deep culture of craftsmanship. Across the valley, makers work in small studios and farm kitchens, producing goods shaped as much by the land as by the wine itself, from pressed oils and hand-thrown pottery to small-batch preserves and jewelry inspired by the surrounding hills.
For visitors, shopping in Sonoma Valley offers a way to extend the experience of a stay long after checkout, bringing home something tangible and lasting rather than simply a memory of a beautiful view.
THE HISTORIC PLAZA AND BEYOND
At the heart of the valley lies a historic town square, shaded by mature trees and ringed by walkways that invite slow, aimless wandering. Shopfronts here range from tucked-away galleries to open-air stalls, each offering a distinct glimpse into the valley's creative community. Many storefronts change with the seasons, rotating pop-up displays of local goods that reflect whatever is being harvested, pressed, or crafted that month. Beyond the square, small clusters of studios and shops are scattered throughout the valley's villages, often housed in converted barns or historic cottages. Exploring them requires no map or plan, just a willingness to follow a quiet side street and see what's tucked behind the next doorway.
FROM GROVE TO BOTTLE
Long before wine defined this valley, olive trees were already thriving in its warm, well-drained soil. That heritage lives on in the small-batch olive oils produced throughout the region, often pressed from fruit grown on the same hillsides where the trees have stood for generations. Tasting a fresh, peppery oil with a piece of crusty bread has become its own ritual for visitors, not unlike a wine tasting in miniature.
Alongside oil, the valley's groves and orchards yield small-batch vinegars, infused honeys, and preserved fruits, many made using techniques passed down through families for generations. These goods travel well, making them among the most popular items for visitors hoping to bring a taste of the valley home.
A quieter Sonoma tasting awaits. OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK 10AM-3PM 3339 Hartman Rd. Santa Rosa CA 95401 707-921-1040 | [email protected] benoviawinery.com
SWEET, SAVORY, AND SMALL-BATCH
Beyond oils and vinegars, the valley's culinary artisans produce an impressive range of small-batch goods: raw honey from hillside apiaries, handmade cheeses aged in local creameries, and preserves made from stone fruit grown just beyond the valley's edge. Farmers markets, held on rotating days throughout the growing season, offer some of the best opportunities to sample this bounty directly from the makers.
These markets are as much a social event as a shopping trip, and makers are often happy to talk through their process. One might explain how a particular honey carries notes of wildflower or sage, depending on where the hives are placed, or how a cheese changes with each passing season.
The best souvenirs here aren't found on a shelf. They're the ones with a story behind every jar.
CRAFTED BY HAND
Beyond food and drink, the valley supports a thriving community of artists working in clay, metal, wood, and textiles. Hand-thrown pottery studios dot the countryside, and many welcome visitors curious to see a piece take shape on the wheel. Jewelry makers often draw inspiration directly from the landscape, incorporating stones, botanicals, and even grapevine motifs into their work.
Woodworkers, too, draw inspiration from the valley's abundant oak and walnut trees, crafting everything from cutting boards to small furniture pieces that showcase the grain and character of trees grown just down the road. For visitors, these handmade goods offer a tangible connection to place, with objects shaped by the same land that produces the valley's celebrated wine.
SEASONAL MARKETS AND FAIRS
Throughout the year, the valley hosts a rotating schedule of seasonal markets and craft fairs, often timed to coincide with harvest milestones or community celebrations. These gatherings bring together dozens of local makers in one place, offering visitors a concentrated dose of the valley's creative output without the need to track down individual studios.
Held outdoors whenever the weather allows, these markets often double as informal social gatherings, featuring live music, food stalls, and plenty of opportunities to chat with the artisans. For visitors hoping to experience the valley's creative community in a single afternoon, a seasonal market is often the best place to start.
BRINGING WINE COUNTRY HOME
What unites all of Sonoma Valley's makers, whether working with olive oil, clay, or honey, is a shared devotion to place. Each product tells a small story about the land it came from: the soil, the season, and the particular slant of afternoon light that shaped a grove or a garden. For visitors, shopping here is less about acquiring souvenirs and more about collecting fragments of a landscape that's easy to fall in love with.
Long after a stay in Sonoma Valley ends, a jar of local honey or a hand-thrown ceramic cup can carry a bit of that experience home, a small, tangible reminder of a place built on craft and care.
