As a client of a great real estate company, we firmly believe that you shouldn’t have to depend on an internet search to connect with industry professionals who are best placed to provide you with the products or services you need right now. We think you deserve something more refined than that.
That’s where the Birmingham Living Magazine comes in.
Through a desire to support and connect people, Greydoor Publishing and the LAH Sotheby’s International Realty team have designed this publication to share details on local companies that are well placed to serve your needs and requirements when buying, selling, or relocating. These companies are known to the real estate team you have been dealing with and have also become known to us at Greydoor Publishing, through the many conversations we have had with them, discussing exactly how they can help you to make your dreams for your new home become a reality.
Every experience is unique, so every real estate client requires a specific set of services throughout their journey. For some, it’s an architect or interior designer to transform their new property. A great architect or interior designer can be an integral part of the decisionmaking process when looking to buy a new property.
Others seek legal services or those of a lender to aid the financial and legal side of the process. And for those who are relocating to an unfamiliar location, it’s often guidance on the great local schools and health and medical centers that are an important factor in choosing an area to call home.
Whatever it is you require, you want to feel confident that the individuals supporting you are trustworthy professionals, able to offer you invaluable expertise. This is the beginning of a new adventure, and you don’t want to feel any disappointment or frustration at the hands of an unreliable contractor or service provider. We understand that your time and money are of utmost value, and where possible, you need to get it right first time.
Working with the carefully selected businesses and services listed within this magazine should mean avoiding the pitfalls of choosing the wrong people for the job. Conversations have been had at many levels with every business featured in this publication, and they feature here because it is considered that these companies will provide premium products and invaluable services.
We hope this magazine helps you find your perfect partners to ensure the smooth and enjoyable journey that you so thoroughly deserve and which we want to be stress-free. We wish you the very best as you embark on this exciting next step!

In recent years, this charming Southern city has quietly become one of America’s most exciting food cities.

Landmark Recognition for Birmingham’s Fine Dining Scene
For locals, this is hardly news. But for the rest of the world that is just catching on, it’s a revelation. With multiple restaurants receiving Michelin Guide recognition and a long history of James Beard Award-winning chefs, Birmingham’s food scene blends traditional Southern flavors with boundary-pushing innovation.
Landmark Recognition for Birmingham’s Fine Dining Scene
At the heart of Birmingham's burgeoning culinary prestige is a thriving fine dining scene, anchored by decades-old establishments like Highlands Bar and Grill — serving French-inspired haute cuisine in Five Points South since 1982 — and young upstarts like the seafood-focused Bayonet.
The city achieved a major milestone with the publication of the first-ever Michelin Guide American South in 2025, which featured 11 Birmingham restaurants. Standouts include the Hot and Hot Fish Club, headed by James Beard Award-winning chef Chris Hastings, with its menu that blends Southern, French and California cooking; and Bottega, an Italian eatery nominated for “Outstanding Hospitality” at the James Beard Awards this year.
The Michelin Guide also included four Bib Gourmand Selections: Bayonet, Pizza Grace, La Fête and OvenBird. This designation recognizes exceptional food at a great value — perfect for family dining.
In addition to the Michelin Guide and multiple James Beard Award nominations, Birmingham achieved another landmark in 2026 when Eater magazine named it one of the 15 best food destinations in the world. The city was singled out, in part, for the diversity of its dining, which ranges from Greek diners and local BBQ to trendy and global-inspired menus.

Local and Seasonal Dining
Local and Seasonal Dining in the “Dinner Table of the South”
As eclectic as Birmingham’s great restaurants are, many of them are united by a shared dedication to using fresh, regional ingredients. Eating what is in season is part of the fabric of life here, and it is a tradition that goes back to well before “farm-to-table” dining became trendy.
And given the richness of Alabama’s agriculture, it is no surprise that many chefs source produce and artisanal goods from nearby farms and markets. This practice allows menus to shift with the seasons.
Celebrated chef and restaurateur Frank Stitt, whose groundbreaking Birmingham restaurants include Highland Bar and Grill and Bottega, was an early champion of farm-to-table practices. His food, which blends traditional Southern cooking with refined techniques and a myriad of global influences, relies on seasonal greens, eggs from local farms, fish from the Gulf and bread from local bakers.
Embracing local, seasonal cuisine not only helps support the farmers who have earned their living from the Alabama soil for generations but also contributes to more sustainable menus in Birmingham restaurants.
Ultimately, no one benefits more than Birmingham restaurantgoers, who can always count on finding new and exciting seasonal dishes on local menus.
Elevated Craft Beverages
Birmingham’s bar scene may not be quite as lauded as its restaurant scene, but it is every bit as deserving of recognition. From inventive craft breweries perfect for having a drink with friends to elevated cocktail lounges that turn mixology into an art form, there is much to sip and stir within Birmingham’s world of craft beverages.
Many of the city’s best bars merge exceptional beverages with an elevated dining experience. At the Collins Bar, where every cocktail is invented on the spot based on the mood and preferences of the patron, the drinks are complemented by a limited menu of gourmet-inspired hot dogs and sandwiches.
La Fête, a Parisian-inspired bar and bistro that chef and owner Kristen Hall envisioned as a “love letter to wine,” is known for colorful desserts like goat cheese tarts and fruit galettes. It’s earned a reputation as one of the city’s great date night spots.
And craft beer connoisseurs have no shortage of excellent options. Enjoy the live music and year-round outdoor patio at Avondale Brewing Company. Sip a brew while playing vintage arcade games at Cahaba Brewing Company. Or sample a Hitchhiker IPA — the top-rated IPA in Alabama, according to BeerAdvocate — at Good People Brewing Company.
Discover Alabama’s Culinary Capital
Birmingham’s culinary identity is founded on simple but powerful ideas: respect for ingredients, creativity in the kitchen and genuine Southern hospitality. And with newfound recognition, it is clear that Birmingham’s food scene is no longer a secret.

A Cultural Journey Through Birmingham
Cradled among Northern Alabama’s rolling Appalachian foothills, Birmingham is a city where profound historic character blends seamlessly with a dynamic arts scene. Founded in 1871 at the intersection of the Alabama & Chattanooga Railroad and the South & North Alabama Railroad, the city quickly developed into an industrial powerhouse.
At various times throughout its history, Birmingham — nicknamed the “Magic City” — has been molded by iron and steel production, reshaped by the Civil Rights Movement and quietly reborn as a hub for art and culture. This Southern city sits at a unique intersection of historic, artistic and musical traditions.
Tradition and Transformation
History Through Art: The Birmingham Museum of Art
At the heart of the city’s art community is the Birmingham Museum of Art, a sprawling institution with a permanent collection encompassing over 29,000 works. Established in 1951, this global art collection spans continents and centuries. It is the largest art museum in Alabama.
In addition to works by European masters and historical art and artifacts from around the world, the Birmingham Museum of Art houses many items that tie directly to local and regional traditions. Native American art, folk art, vernacular art and American decorative arts are well-represented in the museum’s permanent collection.
The Birmingham Museum of Art also routinely hosts exhibitions, educational programs, community events and initiatives that highlight the relationships between art, social justice and civic life. The museum’s location in Downtown Birmingham is nearby from other cultural institutions like the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex and the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame.
Tradition and Transformation
Birmingham’s Industrial Heritage: Sloss Furnaces
Birmingham’s industrial past has also been reinterpreted as an artistic and cultural asset. The historic Sloss Furnaces — once a pig-iron blast furnace facility that produced 900 tons of iron a day — has been saved by dedicated residents and transformed into a vibrant cultural center.
Sloss Furnaces closed down in 1971 and reopened as a national historic landmark a decade later. Today, it tells the collective story of Birmingham’s industrial origins.
While this kind of industrial preservation has become common today, Sloss Furnaces was one of the first sites of its kind to be restored in this way. In addition to being open free of charge to the public for self-guided tours, the 15-acre site also hosts events like metal workshops, food festivals and live music events.

Music: From Jazz Roots to Modern Sounds
Musical innovation has long been an integral part of Birmingham’s cultural fabric. Jazz and blues, in particular, have played a key role in shaping the city’s musical legacy. Birmingham is the birthplace of the legendary Avant-garde jazz player Sun Ra and trumpeter and bandleader Erskine Hawkins, and was the teenage home of boogie-woogie blues piano great Clarence “Pinetop” Smith, who was born in nearby Pike County. The Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame, located in the historic Carver Theatre, preserves the history of Alabama’s jazz musicians and showcases artifacts tied to the city’s most celebrated musical luminaries. The local scene continues to thrive through jazz clubs and blues venues, and through annual events like the Taste of 4th Avenue Jazz Festival. The Birmingham of today also supports a young and exciting indie and DIY music scene, anchored by venues like Saturn, Iron City and the Nick. Every fall, Sloss Furnaces hosts the three-day Furnace Fest, bringing together thousands of fans to see local and national rock, punk, emo and hardcore bands.

Civil Rights: History as Cultural Memory
Few cities played a more pivotal role in the American Civil Rights Movement than Birmingham, and the cultural identity of the city remains deeply connected with its Civil Rights history. Birmingham became an international focal point when the Birmingham Campaign of 1963 drew worldwide attention to racial segregation.
The events of 1963 led directly to the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Today, the Birmingham Civil Rights District encompasses many of the most significant sites of the Civil Rights movement.
The district includes St. Paul United Methodist Church, the 4th Avenue Historic District and the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. These sites, and others including Kelly Ingram Park and Historic Bethel Baptist Church, are also part of the Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument.
The Story of Resilience and Progress
Organized in 1873 as Birmingham’s first Black church, the 16th Street Baptist Church anchors its identity in a profound legacy of struggle and progress. A landmark 1911 structure designed by pioneer Black architect Wallace Rayfield, a critical headquarters for 1960s Civil Rights organizing, a site of tragic white supremacist terror, and an enduring National Historic Landmark all converge in its story, making this sacred space a vital crossroads where American history, painful truths, and a living community thrive.
Discover Birmingham Heritage
Birmingham is a city of memory and imagination, and its cultural landscape is defined by contrasts. Historic churches, modern art spaces, industrial relics and vibrant festivals exist side-by-side, making Birmingham a city where art, history and community expression thrive.

The Art of the Deal
What Happens Behind the Scenes When Birmingham’s Homes Change Hands
Every home sale in Birmingham seems to end the same way: a sign that reads "Sold," a set of keys changing hands, and a photograph on the front steps. But that tidy final scene is the product of weeks of unseen work. Between an accepted offer and an official transfer of ownership, a small army of professionals, including Realtors®, lenders, attorneys, title researchers, inspectors, and appraisers, work through a process that most buyers and sellers only half understand. Knowing what happens in that gap can make the difference between a smooth closing and a stressful one.
The Art of the Deal
From Accepted Offer to Binding Contract
From Accepted Offer to Binding Contract An accepted offer is not a done deal. It's the starting gun. Once a seller agrees to terms, both parties typically sign a purchase agreement that spells out the price, the closing date, and any contingencies, such as the sale being contingent on financing, a satisfactory inspection, or a clear title. The buyer usually puts down earnest money, a deposit held in escrow that signals good faith and is later credited toward the purchase. From here, a clock starts ticking: most contracts set out a defined window, often thirty to forty-five days, for everything else on this list to happen. Strong Communities Start with Strong Management. Great communities don’t happen by accident. Red Rock Realty Group provides professional association management throughout Central Alabama, handling the financials, vendors, maintenance and covenant enforcement—while giving your board the support it needs to lead with confidence. The Art of the Deal
Digging Into the Title
Long before closing day, a title search gets underway.
A title professional combs through public records, including deeds, tax records, and court filings, to confirm that the seller actually owns the property free and clear, or to identify anything that might complicate the sale. That could be an old lien from unpaid contractor work, an unresolved estate matter from a previous owner, a boundary dispute, or an easement granting a utility company access across the yard. In a city with as much history as Birmingham, where some properties have passed through generations of the same family or sat through decades of ownership changes, title issues surface more often than people expect.
If a problem does turn up, it usually gets resolved before closing: a lien is paid off, an heir is tracked down and signs a release, or a survey clarifies a boundary line. Once the search comes back clean, the buyer typically purchases title insurance, a one-time policy that protects against any title defect that might surface later, long after the moving trucks have gone.
A clear title is the quiet guarantee that a home is truly, legally yours.
Financing the Purchase
While the title search moves forward, the buyer's loan file is going through underwriting. A lender verifies income, employment, credit history, and assets, then orders an appraisal to confirm the home is actually worth what the buyer has agreed to pay. Appraisals matter more than many buyers realize: if the appraised value comes in below the contract price, the deal can stall until buyer and seller renegotiate, or until the buyer covers the gap in cash. In competitive pockets of the metro, close to Railroad Park, along the Red Mountain ridge, or in the Over the Mountain communities, appraisal gaps have become a familiar sticking point as demand has pushed offers above recent comparable sales.

Inspections and Negotiated Repairs
A home inspection gives the buyer a detailed look at the property's condition: the roof, foundation, electrical system, plumbing, and HVAC. Older homes, common throughout many of Birmingham's established neighborhoods, often turn up findings that need attention: aging wiring, a furnace nearing the end of its life, or foundation settling typical of homes built decades ago on the region's clay-heavy soil. Buyers and sellers then negotiate: repairs can be completed before closing, the sale price can be adjusted, or the seller can offer a credit toward future work.
Legal Review and the Closing Disclosure
As closing approaches, an attorney or closing agent reviews the title work, the loan documents, and the settlement statement to make sure everything lines up. Buyers receive a Closing Disclosure at least three business days before closing, detailing the final loan terms and closing costs. This waiting period exists so buyers have real time to review the numbers rather than seeing them for the first time at the table.
The Art of the Deal
Closing Day and What to Watch For
Where function meets luxury. Kaleo Builders emerged from a commitment to simplify home renovations. Our mission is to handle the challenge of sourcing skilled craftsmen who deliver outstanding work at fair prices—ensuring your most valuable asset is expertly cared for.
Closing Day and What to Watch For
On closing day, the buyer signs the loan documents, the funds are disbursed, and the deed is recorded with the county, the moment ownership officially transfers. For buyers, the details worth watching are the ones easy to overlook: reading the Closing Disclosure line by line, confirming the final walk-through happens close to the closing date, and understanding exactly which repairs were agreed to versus which were simply discussed. For sellers, it pays to keep records of any repairs made, respond quickly to title questions, and clarify early on which items, such as light fixtures, appliances, and window treatments, stay with the house.
None of this happens quickly, and very little of it is visible from the curb. But it's this unglamorous middle stretch, the searches, the underwriting, the fine print, that turns a handshake into a home.
