OUR HOTEL
Welcome to Boston
Boston wears its history openly. Cobblestone lanes wind past gold-domed statehouses, and the Freedom Trail’s red-brick ribbon links revolutionary landmarks that shaped a nation. Yet this is no museum city frozen in the past. It’s a living, breathing metropolis where centuries-old brownstones share the skyline with glass towers, and where world-class universities keep the streets humming with fresh ideas and youthful energy.
Wander the Public Garden’s swan boats and willow-shaded paths, then cross into Back Bay, where Newbury Street’s boutiques and cafés invite an afternoon of leisurely discovery. Along the Charles River, sailboats drift beneath a skyline that glows amber at sunset. In the North End, the aroma of espresso and fresh cannoli drifts from generations-old Italian bakeries, while just across the harbor, the Seaport District pulses with innovation, art, and waterfront dining.
10 EXPERIENCESBoston is a city of seasons, too, with blazing autumn foliage, snow-dusted brownstones in winter, cherry blossoms along the Esplanade in spring, and long golden evenings on the harbor in summer. Whatever draws you here, Boston offers the rare gift of a city where past and present walk hand in hand. We’re delighted to have you stay with us as you discover it.

History of The Ritz-Carlton, Boston
THE GILDING OF AN IDEA
How The Ritz-Carlton Turned Service Into an Art Form
There is a particular kind of hush that settles over a great hotel lobby — the sound of a place that has stopped trying to impress you and simply decided to take care of you. That hush was, in many ways, invented. Or at least it was codified more than a century ago by a Swiss hotelier named César Ritz, whose name would come to mean something larger than the man himself: an entire grammar of hospitality built on the radical premise that luxury wasn’t about excess. It was about attention. Ritz made his reputation in the grand hotels of Europe, and by the time he opened the Ritz Paris in 1898 — followed by his partnership at The Carlton in London — he had already assembled the principles that would define his legacy: intimacy over grandeur, discretion over display, and a standard of personal service so exacting it bordered on devotion. Guests weren’t simply housed; they were understood. A returning visitor’s preferences were remembered before they were spoken. The goal was not to dazzle but to disappear — to make the machinery of luxury invisible, so that only the comfort remained. It took nearly three decades for that philosophy to cross the Atlantic. When it did, in 1927, it arrived in Boston.
AN AMERICAN DEBUT, GILDED AGE STYLE
The Ritz-Carlton, Boston opened as the first Ritz-Carlton in America, and it did not so much join the city’s social fabric as reweave it. Overlooking the Public Garden, the hotel became an instant fixture of American high society — the kind of address where Cole Porter composed, where Tennessee Williams kept a room, and where Winston Churchill stayed and expected his favorite shade of red on the walls of his suite. He got it. That single detail — an entire room reupholstered in red linen ahead of a head of state’s arrival — says more about the hotel’s founding ethos than any brochure could. Under Edward Wyner’s stewardship, The Ritz-Carlton, Boston didn’t simply import European elegance; it engineered a new standard for what an American hotel could be, introducing private baths in every guest room, at a time when that was a genuine novelty. Formal staff uniforms. Fresh flowers renewed daily. À la carte dining that treated food as an occasion rather than a formality. Intimate lobbies designed for conversation rather than spectacle. The hotel even kept a craftsman on staff whose entire job was hand-painting gold striping onto furniture — an almost absurd level of devotion to detail, except that absurdity was precisely the point. Nothing was too small to matter. This was hospitality reimagined as craft. And it worked: Boston’s Ritz-Carlton became shorthand for a certain kind of American sophistication, proof that the country could build something as considered, as layered, as Europe’s grand hotels — and make it entirely its own.
FROM A SINGLE ADDRESS TO A GLOBAL SIGNATURE
For decades, the Ritz-Carlton name lived quietly, tethered to that one storied Boston address and its European sisters. Then, in 1983, The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company was formed, and the brand entered an entirely new chapter — one of deliberate, careful expansion. By 1985, the portfolio tripled, adding properties in Laguna Niguel, Naples, and Atlanta’s Buckhead neighborhood. By 1992, twenty-three hotels carried the name.
What’s notable is what didn’t change amid that growth: the obsession with service. That same year, The Ritz-Carlton became the first hotel company to win the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, a recognition typically reserved for manufacturing and engineering excellence, not hospitality — a signal that the brand’s founding attention to detail had been institutionalized, not diluted. A year later, The Ritz-Carlton, Hong Kong opened, carrying the philosophy into Asia and marking the brand’s first true step toward becoming a global institution rather than an American one.
The expansion has continued in the decades since, each new chapter adding a different register to the brand’s voice rather than simply adding scale. In 2000, The Ritz-Carlton Residences opened its first address in Washington, D.C., extending the brand’s sensibility into permanent homes. In 2009, Phulay Bay in Krabi, Thailand became the first Ritz-Carlton Reserve, a more intimate, sanctuary-style interpretation of the brand built for remote, singular destinations. And in 2022, that same instinct for reinvention set sail quite literally, as Evrima, the first vessel in The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, launched its inaugural voyage.
Today, under Marriott International, The Ritz-Carlton spans more than one hundred hotels and resorts across the globe — a scale that César Ritz, working room by room in Belle Époque Paris, could scarcely have imagined. And yet the through-line remains unmistakable. It is still, at its core, a philosophy about the guest who returns to find their favorite color already on the walls.
THE ORIGINAL STILL STANDING
What makes The Ritz-Carlton, Boston enduring isn’t nostalgia — it’s that the hotel still functions as a kind of founding document. Every modern property, whether perched over a private cove in Thailand or anchored on a yacht crossing open water, still answers, in some way, to the standard set in that Boston lobby nearly a century ago: that true luxury is not about scale or spectacle, but about a guest feeling, quietly and completely, seen.
The lion and crown have traveled a long way from the Public Garden. But they have never really left it.

QHOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR CULINARY PHILOSOPHY, AND HOW DOES IT SHAPE THE DINING EXPERIENCE AT THE RITZ-CARLTON, BOSTON?
As a chef, I like to craft a curated guest experience featuring local, seasonal dishes. I keep it simple yet refined; less is more. I enjoy telling a story with my ingredients and bringing a real sense of place to our guests’ plates. Artisan Bistro and Avery Bar give me the freedom to design meals that create a special memory for our guests.

At The Ritz-Carlton, we believe every diner deserves an authentic, one-of-a-kind experience. This is true across all our hotels. AS A RESTAURANT CHEF, HOW DO YOU INSPIRE AND DEVELOP YOUR CULINARY TEAM?
Every team member who joins us is passionate about their work and the food they serve, and it’s my job to ensure that passion shows in their dishes. I also want them to enjoy creating the guest experiences I mentioned earlier, because I think that enjoyment shows in the final product. I ensure everyone in the kitchen knows the menu and each dish, including the flavors, the inspiration, the textures, and the overall vision.
IS THERE A SIGNATURE DISH THAT BEST REPRESENTS YOUR CULINARY STYLE AND THE SPIRIT OF THE RITZ-CARLTON, BOSTON?
Yes! My personal favorite is the Jonah Crab Risotto at the Artisan Bistro. It features fresh Atlantic Jonah crab, Italian summer truffles, and local herbs. It’s simple and elegant, with a uniquely regional feel.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED TO DEVELOP NEXT WITHIN THE CULINARY PROGRAM AT THE RITZ-CARLTON, BOSTON?
At the moment, it’s all about caviar! We’re developing and expanding our caviar services across In-Room Dining and the outlets. We’ve also brought in Petrossian Caviar, one of the world’s finest caviar companies. Away from caviar, we’re currently offering a Johnny cake with a New England twist: cranberries, Vermont crème fraiche, and chives and shallots. A real sweet-and-savory treat!

Exploring Boston’s Premier Culinary Destinations
A TASTE OF BOSTON
EXPLORING BOSTON’S PREMIER CULINARY DESTINATIONS
A CITY BUILT AROUND THE TABLE
Boston’s relationship with food has always been tied to its harbor. Ships once arrived carrying spices, salt cod, and the ingredients of a young nation’s first great trading port, and that maritime inheritance still shapes the city’s plates today. But to describe Boston’s dining scene as simply a seafood town would miss the far more interesting story: a compact city where more than two dozen distinct neighborhoods, each shaped by a different wave of immigration, have built their own culinary traditions one on top of the other. Portuguese pastry shops, Italian espresso bars, Cantonese noodle shops, and Caribbean bakeries all sit within a short train ride of one another, making Boston’s food scene as much a study in geography as it is in flavor. The result is a city that rewards wandering on foot as much as it rewards a reservation.
THE NORTH END AND CHINATOWN
No conversation about Boston food starts anywhere but the North End, the city’s oldest residential neighborhood and, for more than a century, its Italian heart. Narrow streets, barely wide enough for two people to pass side by side, are lined with bakeries perfuming the air with fresh cannoli shells, familyrun trattorias with steamed windows, and espresso bars where regulars linger over conversation long after the cup is empty. The neighborhood’s summer feast weekends, when saints’ processions wind through streets strung with lights, remain one of the most authentic and least touristy traditions left in any major American city.
A short walk south, Chinatown offers an entirely different rhythm: dim sum carts rattling past crowded round tables on weekend mornings, night markets that spill produce and steamed buns onto the sidewalk, and a density of regional Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, and Southeast Asian kitchens that rivals cities many times Boston’s size. Handpulled noodle shops sit beside Sichuan hot pot rooms and Taiwanese bakeries stacked high with milk bread, while late-night bubble tea counters keep the neighborhood buzzing long after the rest of downtown has gone quiet. Together, these two neighborhoods sit less than a mile apart yet transport diners across entire continents within a single afternoon.
To eat well in Boston, you don’t need a reservation. You need a good pair of walking shoes.
A CITY OF GLOBAL KITCHENS
Venture beyond the city’s most photographed blocks, and Boston’s culinary range only widens. Across the harbor, a historic waterfront neighborhood settled by generations of immigrants has become one of the region’s most exciting destinations for Latin American cooking, with Salvadoran pupusas, Colombian arepas, and Central American bakeries filling storefronts along its main commercial strip. To the south, a neighborhood long shaped by Cape Verdean, Haitian, and Vietnamese communities serves some of the city’s best slow-braised stews and fragrant pho, often from family-run kitchens that have operated for decades with little fanfare beyond word of mouth. Farther west, a village-like commercial district is known for its concentration of Jewish delicatessens and Middle Eastern bakeries, where fresh-baked bagels, hand-rolled bourekas, and towering pastrami sandwiches draw lines on weekend mornings. Closer to the water, a historic Irish-American neighborhood built its own food identity around unpretentious pub fare and no-frills seafood shacks, where fried clams and lobster rolls are served in paper baskets rather than on white tablecloths. It is a fitting reminder that Boston’s culinary reputation was not built on formality alone: some of its most cherished dishes are just as likely to be eaten standing at a counter as seated at a table.
MARKETS, HALLS, AND THE WATERFRONT
Boston’s historic market district, anchored by a colonnaded marketplace hall dating to the early 19th century, remains one of the most visited food destinations in the country, its long shared tables filled with everything from clam chowder to international street food under one soaring roof. A few blocks away, an even older tradition continues at the city’s oldest open-air market, where pushcart vendors have sold fruit, vegetables, and fresh fish on the same street corner since before the American Revolution, drawing home cooks and chefs alike before dawn.
Down along the harbor, the Seaport district has become the city’s newest culinary frontier, its sleek dining rooms wrapped in floor-to-ceiling windows to take full advantage of sweeping open-water views. Menus here tend to lean into the city’s seafood heritage, but with a distinctly modern sensibility, pairing just-caught oysters and lobster with wine lists that draw from small producers around the world. On warm evenings, the district’s waterfront boardwalk fills with diners moving between outdoor patios, food trucks, and pop-up beer gardens that appear each summer along the harbor’s edge.
NEIGHBORHOOD GEMS AND SEASONAL RHYTHMS
Beyond the well-trodden districts, some of Boston’s most memorable meals happen in neighborhoods that rarely appear on a typical visitor’s itinerary. The South End, with its dense grid of Victorian rowhouses, has quietly become one of the city’s most exciting dining corridors, home to chef-driven kitchens that rotate menus with the seasons and a Sunday farmers’ market that draws crowds from across the city. Farther out, university neighborhoods along the western edge of the city support a constantly evolving scene of Ethiopian, Indian, and West African cooking, often served from unassuming storefronts that locals guard closely, alongside a growing number of coffee roasters and plant-based kitchens catering to a younger crowd.
Boston’s dining calendar also follows the seasons more closely than those of most American cities. Spring brings the first soft-shell crab and asparagus to menus across the city. Summer, meanwhile, draws the city outdoors entirely, with sidewalk cafés, rooftop bars, and harborside picnics built around the season’s sweet corn, tomatoes, and stone fruit. Fall transforms harbor-view dining rooms into showcases for local apple varieties, squash, and the start of oyster season. Winter, rather than slowing things down, brings its own comfort: steaming bowls of chowder served in neighborhood taverns, mulled cider at outdoor markets, and warmly lit dining rooms that make the cold outside feel like part of the experience rather than an obstacle.
What ties all of this together is proximity. Few American cities pack this much culinary range into a footprint small enough to cross on foot in under an hour. A morning spent at the old market by the harbor can lead naturally into an afternoon of dumplings in Chinatown, pupusas across the water, and a sunset dinner overlooking the harbor in the Seaport, all in the course of a single day. For visitors and residents alike, that density is the real draw: not a single destination restaurant, but an entire city built, quite literally, around the table.

A CITY THAT FEELS LIKE COMING HOME
There is a particular moment that seems to happen to nearly every visitor to Boston. It might arrive while walking along the harborfront at dusk, watching sailboats drift past the skyline, or while wandering a tree-lined side street lined with bowfront brick townhouses. Somewhere between the cobblestones and the harbor breeze, a question forms: what would it be like to actually live here? Boston has long been a favorite for a weekend escape, but increasingly, families, professionals, and retirees are answering that question by staying for good. The city’s compact scale, layered history, and unusually walkable neighborhoods make the leap from visitor to resident feel less like a leap and more like a natural next step.

Part of Boston’s pull is that it does not offer a single version of city living, but many. Along the flat of the hill near the State House, gas lamps still flicker outside Federal-style rowhouses on narrow brick streets, drawing residents who want history underfoot and the Public Garden a short stroll away. Across town, the grand boulevards near the Charles River Esplanade are known for bay-windowed brownstones and a slower, garden-district pace, while the river itself offers miles of paths for morning runs and evening bike rides. For those drawn to a newer skyline, the waterfront district near the Innovation District has transformed in the last two decades from working piers into a dense, energetic neighborhood of glass residential towers, harborwalks, and open green space that stretches down to the water’s edge.
Families often gravitate toward the leafy streets on the western edge of the city, where Victorian triple-deckers sit beside pocket parks and a large urban pond invites paddleboats in summer and ice skating in winter. Just across the river, a university-anchored community offers a similar mix of green space and walkable shopping streets, with the added draw of some of the region’s top public and independent schools. Retirees, meanwhile, are increasingly choosing low-maintenance residences in the West End, a compact riverside enclave where some of the world’s leading hospitals, quiet green squares, and the Charles River basin are all within easy reach on foot.
CULTURE, GREEN SPACE, AND EVERYDAY LIFE
What distinguishes Boston from other historic American cities is how thoroughly the past and present coexist in daily life. The Freedom Trail’s red-brick line runs directly through neighborhoods where people are simply living their lives, walking dogs, and pushing strollers past sites that shaped a nation. A world-renowned art museum and an eclectic collection of smaller galleries and science institutions give residents a rotating calendar of exhibitions without ever needing to leave the city. Meanwhile, more than a thousand acres of interconnected parks, known collectively as the city’s Emerald Necklace of green space, link neighborhoods together with walking and cycling paths that make it possible to move from a downtown residence to a riverside park without ever hailing a car.
The four distinct New England seasons add their own rhythm to Boston living. Spring fills the city’s parks with cherry blossoms and reopened outdoor cafés, while summer draws residents to the harbor islands—just a short ferry ride from downtown—for beach days that feel worlds away from city life. Fall brings crisp air and brilliant foliage along the river paths. Finally, winter turns the Public Garden’s pond into a postcard-perfect skating scene.

SETTING DOWN ROOTS
Boston’s appeal as a place to settle permanently also comes down to practicality. The city’s density means that a car is often optional rather than essential, with an extensive subway and commuter rail network connecting neighborhoods and surrounding towns alike. Its concentration of hospitals and universities has made it a global hub for medicine, biotechnology, and education, drawing a steady stream of professionals who arrive for a fellowship or a graduate program and end up staying for decades. Add to this a calendar of neighborhood block parties, seasonal street fairs, and free outdoor concerts, and it becomes clear why so many who first visit Boston for a long weekend eventually find themselves searching listings for a rowhouse on a quiet side street.
Perhaps most telling is how residents describe the city once they have lived there for a while: not as a place they moved to, but as a place that gradually became theirs. A morning coffee and a walk along the harbor, a Sunday spent exploring a different neighborhood on foot, an evening at an outdoor concert on the Esplanade lawn. These are small rituals, but they are the ones that turn a visit into a life. For those still weighing the question that so often surfaces on a Boston weekend, the honest answer from those who have already made the move is simple: once the city gets under your skin, it rarely lets go.
