Custom tailoring is defined by precision, process, and personalization. A well-made garment begins with exact measurements and a clear understanding of how a client wants to look and feel. Recording numerous individual measurements allows clothiers to account for posture, movement, and proportion details that ready-to-wear garments often overlook. Fabric selection plays an important role, as color, pattern, and texture influence comfort and appearance across occasions. It is my honor to share some recent additions to The Townsend Hotel’s roster of industry accolades. Travel + Leisure’s Readers’ poll named The Townsend Hotel the “Best Hotel in Michigan”. Birmingham, Michigan, is a city with a colorful past and a promising future. Visitors are encouraged to wander through its walkable streets and explore the many great shops and restaurants. Birmingham is also a business center where influential minds meet to promote the many industries flourishing in Southeast Michigan. In the center is, of course, The Townsend Hotel.

If you have not dined lately in The Townsend’s restaurant, Rugby Grille, we would love to show you our innovative creations! The notable American wine and lifestyle magazine, Wine Spectator, has named The Rugby Grille a recipient of its Two-Glass Award of Excellence since 2013. Diners continue to rate our restaurant as one of the best exceptional dining experiences.

Another exceptional culinary experience, Afternoon Tea at The Townsend, continues to be a traditional favorite for many in the Detroit Metro area. Whether as an occasional indulgence or to celebrate a special event such as a birthday or shower party with a group of friends, Afternoon Tea provides a lovely and memorable escape from the ordinary.

Please feel free to contact our elite staff for anything you might need to make your stay more pleasurable. We look forward to providing you with a memorable experience.

IN-ROOM DINING

When the day begins or comes to an end, what can be better than an exquisite dining experience in the privacy of your room?

The Townsend Hotel provides in-room dining with selections from our Rugby Grille breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus. Plan an intimate dinner for two, or twelve, prepared by our Executive Chef.

THE TOWNSEND –

Q&A With Chef Trevor

What inspirations guide the creation of your seasonal menus, and how do they reflect the sophisticated ambiance of The Rugby Grille?

The menus at the Rugby Grille are focused on seasonal, fresh, bright flavors. Our service team, paired with an authentic made-in-house menu, is an inspiration for the Townsend Hotel. For our returning guests, this is a place of comfort, peace, and attentive service—where every request is thoughtfully handled to create a memorable experience. For our new guests, we invite you to join us, and we look forward to seeing you.

How does the refined setting of The Rugby Grille influence the flavors, ingredients, and culinary philosophy of your menus?

Rugby stands out in a way few hotels and restaurants can match. Our skilled culinary team is prepared to customize menu options to ensure a seamless guest experience and maximize satisfaction. The menu’s philosophy aligns perfectly with the restaurant’s atmosphere.

Could you describe a signature dish that encapsulates the essence of dining at The Rugby Grille? Our signature dessert is the Chocolate Mousse Cake. A Rugby steadfast favorite. It is just like the restaurant and hotel, elegant, refined, rich and sweet. The Dark Chocolate “mirror” glaze shows you how much you are enjoying it. Reflecting on the experience and celebrating life - enjoy!

How do you ensure that the seafood and produce are of the highest quality while celebrating locally sourced ingredients? We source our produce through local vendors and in the heart of Detroit, in the Eastern Market. Seafood is all about the freshness. We find our products don’t last long, so we bring in fresh seafood daily due to increased demand for exceptional products.

How important is presentation in the dining experience at The Rugby Grille, and what inspires the visual appeal of your dishes? The dishes must be visually striking, built in a way for guests to easily eat. More importantly, they must be a flavor explosion. Every bite, every time. We leave no reason to go elsewhere.

Are there regional influences or culinary traditions that inspire the flavors at The Rugby Grille? My culinary background stems from classical French. Working towards that flavor profile and technique, we also must adjust to the everchanging needs of our local community. I find classic never goes out of style and always comes back. Same in food and synergy around The Rugby Grille.

Looking ahead, are there any new culinary experiences or dining initiatives that guests can anticipate at The Rugby Grille? The Rugby Grille will always have a focus on freshness and locally inspired trends. We have monthly wine dinners, bourbon dinners and classes all to join and celebrate with us. The bottom line is, The Rugby Grille will continue to perform at the highest of standards.

Our Hotel

Q&A With Concierge Lynette Zebrowski

Could you walk us through a typical day in the life of a concierge, and how each part of your day contributes to crafting exceptional guest experiences?

The day usually starts by reviewing the guest arrivals for the day and working with the other departments throughout the hotel to make sure any special requests are in place prior to guest arrival. From there, we go where the day takes us! It could be spent helping plan an engagement, meeting with the manager of a new spa or restaurant in the area, securing tickets to a sold-out show, or even taking one of our furry guests for a walk. Every day is different!

What behind-the-scenes efforts, planning, or attention to detail go into your role that guests might not immediately see, but that make their stay seamless and memorable?

We try to learn as much as we can about our guests at the first interaction with them. Our team here at The Townsend Hotel is amazing at noting and sharing information that we learn about our guests. For example, we have a guest who once told a staff member that he loves Better Made Potato Chips, and that he can only get them when he comes home to Detroit. We make it a point to have a variety of these in his room every stay, welcoming him “home.”

What do you find most rewarding about being a concierge, whether it’s creating unforgettable moments, helping guests discover hidden gems, or orchestrating special celebrations?

I think the most rewarding part is knowing that you’ve helped take away even the smallest amount of stress that often comes with traveling. Whatever the request may be, to have a guest stop by to share what they liked (or even disliked) after helps us with the next guest. To see a smile on a guest’s face is pretty great too!

In your view, what sets Birmingham, Michigan apart from other destinations, and how do you help guests experience its unique character and luxury offerings?

Birmingham is known for being a walkable community with an abundance of restaurants, boutique shopping, two movie theaters, salons, spas, art galleries and parks. The Townsend Hotel’s location, surrounded by all of these, gives us the advantage over other hotels, as it makes recommendations quite easy!

How do you approach designing bespoke experiences for guests, from first-time visitors to returning guests seeking something extraordinary?

Again, we try to learn as much as we can from our guests at our first interaction with them. What brings them to the area, who are they traveling with, how much time do they have to get out and explore? From here, we can help plan and maximize what they can experience while staying with us.

Are there any hidden gems, exclusive opportunities, or local secrets you love to introduce guests to, helping them create unique memories?

Well, they wouldn’t be a secret now then, would they? I encourage every guest to take the time to chat with our concierge team so that we can create a memorable experience catered to the individual guest!

QLOCKTWO - The Art of Time Reimagined

German Craftsmanship. Contemporary Art. Timeless Presence.

In a world defined by precision, QLOCKTWO dares to slow it down. Handcrafted in Schwäbisch Gmünd, Germany, each piece transforms time from numbers into language and light - a poetic expression that speaks rather than ticks.

Founded by artists Marco Biegert and Andreas Funk, QLOCKTWO unites the discipline of German engineering with the emotion of modern design. The result is not a clock, but a work of art that redefines how we perceive time - crafted with the devotion and mastery found in the great traditions of horology, yet created to celebrate stillness and presence.

Two instruments. One philosophy. To elevate the perception of time into an experience of timeless awareness. EARTH The Icon of Origin MOON A Poetic Tribute to Cosmic Time Born from the radical question “What is time?”, QLOCKTWO EARTH has become a modern design icon. Instead of hands or digits, it illuminates the moment in words. “IT IS HALF PAST EIGHT.” For centuries, the moon has guided artists, scientists, and dreamers alike. Available in over twenty languages and a curated palette of exquisite finishes - from pure white to oxidized steel, raw stone, or hand-applied gold leaf - each piece reflects the individuality of its collector. Whether in a lakeside villa, a mountain retreat, or a city penthouse, QLOCKTWO EARTH transforms interiors into sanctuaries of calm and design. The QLOCKTWO MOON honours this celestial rhythm through 28 luminous phases - from new moon to full - each an ode to the passage of light. Hand-finished in lacquer, platinum, or rare moon gold, every surface reveals the artistry of Schwäbisch Gmünd’s master craftsmen. The result is not merely a timepiece, but a collectible sculpture - a quiet dialogue between humanity, nature, and the cosmos. MOON does not measure time. It mesmerizes it. It turns the present moment into eternity. Each QLOCKTWO is handcrafted, numbered, and individually finished - no two are ever alike. Surfaces are treated like canvases, reflecting a singular devotion to material and detail. Winner of more than 40 international design awards, QLOCKTWO stands as a symbol of a new precision - one that measures not seconds, but moments. As co-founder Andreas Funk reflects: “THE MORE YOU TRY TO GRASP TIME, THE MORE IT DISAPPEARS. WHAT REMAINS IS THE BEAUTY OF THE NOW”. www.qlocktwo.com THE TOWNSEND HOTEL 47

Heart of Detroit

A Couple’s Guide To Charm, Romance, and Enchanting Experiences

While almost every city offers its fair share of special things for couples to do, Detroit has a refreshing energy with an intimate sort of charm. The serene environment alone sets the scene, with the tranquil riverfront providing the perfect backdrop for couples seeking to make memories in the Motor City.

From world-class art to exquisite dining, there is no dearth of romantic activities here. Whether enjoying the solitude of a quiet meal or exploring the region’s best offerings, Detroit celebrates loving bonds like no other city.

Walking Along the Detroit Riverwalk

There is no more quintessential romantic start to a day than a stroll along the Detroit International Riverwalk, the vibrant promenade along the Detroit River spanning some three miles. Whether exploring waterfront dining options or simply taking in the scenery, the environment offers a wonderful spot for couples to reconnect.

The attraction is beautiful at any time of day, but is particularly breathtaking at sunrise and sunset, making it a popular spot for proposals. A sunset cruise can be an especially memorable option for couples who want to take in the skyline from a different vantage point.

Explore the Wonders of Belle Isle Park

Few places in Detroit are more romantic than Belle Isle Park. Over 982 acres, the park is located downtown and is widely considered one of the city’s most notable landmarks. While it draws people of all ages, it is an ideal spot for couples to escape the noise and wander the expansive green grounds and winding trails for a while. Occasional events also fill the calendar, with everything from live music to cocktail parties.

Part of the vast canvas belongs to the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory, a botanical gem known for its magnificent palm trees, color-drenched orchids and an array of exotic blooms. It is also known as one of the oldest historic properties in the whole United States. The setting here is lush, with abundant greenery adding texture and visual intrigue to any moment, big or small.

What the experts say...

From classic silhouettes to refined European cuts, custom tailoring offers flexibility while preserving elegance.

At Cicchini Custom Clothier, this philosophy has been refined for generations. Founded in Detroit by master tailor Paul Cicchini, the business established a reputation for meticulous craftsmanship and enduring quality. Since 1949, our family’s mission has been to deliver exceptional custom garments through world-class fabrics, expert, precise craftsmanship, and a seamless client experience. Today, from its Downtown Birmingham location, Cicchini provides a personalized approach that takes care of all your clothing needs.

Savor Delicious Local Flavors

No activity bonds foodie couples more effectively than a gastronomic adventure. Detroit is home to a thriving food scene, one that has grown significantly in recent years. Downtown features elegant restaurants led by expert chefs, many of whom are classically trained. No matter what the craving, there is an eatery in town that will satiate it while providing just the right ambiance for a romantic meal. Among the most well-known is Cliff Bell’s, a chic circa-1935 spot featuring live jazz and upscale ambiance.

Other parts of town, like Jefferson-Chalmers and New Center, offer their own charm for food fanatics. Whether in the mood for a slice of famous square pizza, looking for some authentic Jamaican cuisine or wanting to dig into a local favorite like a Coney Dog or the widely loved corned beef egg roll, there is a spot in town that will accommodate. Even a charming, old-school deli has the potential to be a romantic option for couples who wish to dine their way through the city.

The Soul of Townsend

THE SOUL OF TOWNSEND: A Walk Through Detroit’s Emerging Arts Corridor

Great art is almost always born out of hardship and struggle. And few cities have experienced hardship and struggle quite like Detroit. But the Detroit of today is a city that has been rebuilt anew, in some ways, very literally. As Detroit sheds its reputation for Rust Belt grit, it is quietly earning a new one as one of America’s most vital and exciting art cities. Creativity waits around seemingly every corner here, from world-class museums that showcase classical and contemporary art to cutting-edge galleries and entire neighborhoods that have been transformed into canvases for the local arts community.

Discover the Top Art Museums in Detroit

In the heart of Midtown Detroit, the sprawling Detroit Institute of Arts is at the forefront of the city’s art world and is just a 30-minute drive from The Townsend Hotel. Voted the number one best art museum in America two years in a row by USA Today, the museum houses over 65,000 works that span continents and centuries. Highlights include Diego Rivera’s Detroit Industry fresco cycle and Vincent van Gogh’s Self-Portrait, the first Van Gogh painting to enter a museum collection in the United States.

Just a few blocks away, the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD) is a prestigious space that highlights innovative and experimental works by some of today’s most visionary artists. MOCAD not only gives voice to Detroit artists but also helps draw connections between the local art scene and the global art community.

Many museums throughout the greater Detroit Metro area also add to the local art conversation. In the suburb of Bloomfield Hills, the Cranbrook Art Museum showcases 20th and 21st-century art, architecture, craft and design by Detroit artists just minutes from the Townsend Hotel.

Explore Street Art and Murals

Detroit wears its history on its walls for all to see. The city is home to a staggering collection of murals, and more are added every year at events like the BLKOUT Walls Mural Festival. The city’s eclectic and ever-changing street art has played a huge role in earning the city its current reputation as a vibrant arts hub.

Many neighborhoods throughout Detroit display spectacular murals. It can be seen throughout Mexicantown, along the Dequindre Cut Greenway and on the walls of The Belt, a Downtown Detroit Alley lined with trendy eateries and dozens of works of public art. But arguably, no place in Detroit better displays the spirit of the city’s street art scene than the Eastern Market.

Detroit’s Eastern Market is a commercial district, the heart of which is a six-block public market that has been operating since 1891. Hundreds of vendors sell local produce and handmade goods at the market on Saturdays, and the area around the market displays a stunning array of murals. Every year, the area is given a facelift during the Murals in the Market festival, allowing local muralists to add new creations to this beautiful corner of the city.

Tour Galleries and Art Spaces

Pockets of creativity are thriving all over Detroit. Multiple neighborhoods and districts all over the city harbor thriving arts communities and support a diverse array of artist-run galleries, studios and other art spaces, many of them wildly creative and unconventional. A prime example is the McDougall-Hunt neighborhood, a historically Black area in which the Heidelberg Project has been gradually transforming derelict houses to create a large-scale outdoor art environment project since the 1980s.

Midtown Detroit is another great place to start exploring the local arts scene. The Midtown area is currently home to around 10 art galleries, some of which have been operating for decades, long before the city’s current cultural Renaissance. Another highlight of Midtown is the Detroit Artists Market (DAM), which was founded in 1932 and remains a pillar of the art scene.

The East Village neighborhood has also emerged as one of the most exciting artistic epicenters in Detroit. The artistic development of this neighborhood was pioneered by the Library Street Collective’s Little Village project, which has transformed a historic church and the surrounding buildings into a cultural hub with galleries, performance spaces and studios with a locally-rooted community mindset.

TOWNSEND TREASURES:

Exploring the Area’s Hidden Hubs

Detroit and its surrounding areas are full of surprises. Famous for its legendary automotive industry and its subsequent industrial decline, Detroit has emerged as a place brimming with possibility. It has incredible parks, beloved sports teams, world-class museums, a burgeoning foodie culture and a music scene that continues to reinvent itself. An area synonymous with innovation and grit, Detroit and its neighboring areas continue to evolve and keep pace with contemporary culture. It is an exciting place to spend a day, a week, or longer exploring iconic attractions and hidden gems alike. These are some of the top things to see and do in this uniquely American city.

Detroit offers truly stunning green spaces. Belle Isle Park, a beautiful park that encompasses a 985-acre island in the Detroit River near downtown Detroit, is the crown jewel of Detroit parks, offering an urban oasis with beautiful walking paths and unbeatable views of the city skyline. There is no better place to watch the sun go down than Sunset Point, at the island’s westernmost tip. What the experts say...

FANCY-SHAPED DIAMONDS ARE TRENDING.

Although round diamonds remain a classic, we’re seeing more clients interested in shapes like oval and emerald. Whether you’re designing your dream engagement ring or choosing a band to complement it, you’ll want to be sure to choose the right cut of diamond for you. Here is a quick breakdown of popular diamond shapes to help you find the perfect one for your special piece of jewelry.

Oval

A pear-cut diamond gets its name because of its single point and rounded end. This unique shape makes a statement. More than any other diamond shape, pear-cut diamonds appear the largest for their carat weight. While every diamond has its own charm, choose a style that speaks to your heart.

Oval-cut diamonds are amongst the most requested styles because their elongated shape creates the illusion of a greater size. An oval is an ideal choice for someone who likes the fire and brilliance of a round diamond but wants something unique.

Emerald

The unique look of an emerald-cut diamond is created by the step cuts of its pavilion and large facets. Instead of the sparkle of a brilliant-cut, emerald-cut diamonds produce a hall-of-mirrors effect, offering an elegant appeal.

Museums and Cultural Institutions

Detroit’s museums are eclectic and exceptional. The Motown Museum allows visitors to walk through the studio where Diana Ross and the Temptations recorded their hits. The Michigan Science Center includes over 220 hands-on science exhibits. And the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, one of the largest museums of its kind in the world, explores the African American journey from prehistoric Africa to modern-day Detroit.

And of course, there are museums dedicated to Detroit’s incredible automotive legacy. The Henry Ford Museum and the Automotive Hall of Fame — conveniently located across from each other — each examine different aspects of American innovation and the workers who made it possible.

The Detroit Zoo

A 125-acre facility that provides a home for more than 2,000 animals, the Detroit Zoo is one of the premier animal attractions in the Midwest. Each year, around 1.3 million people visit the zoo, which is operated by the nonprofit Detroit Zoological Society with a mission to create a meaningful connection between people and the natural world.

A broad array of wildlife experiences can be enjoyed here. The zoo houses unique species from around the globe, each in beautifully maintained habitats. View polar bears and rescued sea otters in the Arctic Ring of Life, explore the serene Butterfly Garden and experience dedicated areas like the Cotton Family Wolf Wilderness and Devereaux Tiger Forest.

The Detroit Zoo is also convenient to almost anywhere in the Detroit area. The zoo is located roughly midway between downtown Detroit and Birmingham, roughly 15 minutes from The Townsend Hotel.

A Home for Sports Fans

Detroit is one of America’s great sports cities, with four major league teams that play in three world-class facilities in the downtown area. The Detroit Lions call Ford Field home, while the Detroit Red Wings hockey team and the Detroit Pistons basketball team both play at Little Caesars Arena, just a few blocks away.

And like any city with great sports teams, Detroit also has a great sports bar scene. From local hotspots that get characteristically lively on game days to luxurious rooftop bars within view of the stadiums, sports aficionados will find a multitude of perfect places to drink and dine while cheering on their favorite team.

Baseball fans can also catch the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park all summer long. And while Detroit might be best known for its major league heavy-hitters, the city also hosts a multitude of minor league teams, college sports organizations and local leagues, from Detroit Roller Derby and Motor City Rockers ice hockey to Wayne State University’s many sports teams.

Introducing Detroit

A Vacationer’s Guide to Making a Permanent Move to the City

A Brief History of the Motor City & Motown

Detroit is best known for two cultural phenomena: its status as Motor City and being the birthplace of Motown. Settled in 1701 by a French explorer, Detroit became a fur trading post that sparked economic growth. This growth skyrocketed in 1913 with the invention of Henry Ford’s assembly line, an innovation in the manufacturing process that fueled astronomical expansion as companies poured in to establish themselves in the boom town. This earned Detroit its nickname of “Motor City.”

In 1959, Berry Gordy Jr. found inspiration in this nickname when naming his new record label. He settled on the now-iconic moniker of “Motown,” a portmanteau of “motor” and “town.” Gordy’s ear for talent saw his business become one of the most successful Black-owned businesses in the United States and kickstarted the careers of Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, and countless other acts.

A City on the Rise

Detroit’s recent wave of economic growth is based on a far more diversified set of industries than its original boom in the 20th century, which means the city is better able to cope with market fluctuations. While manufacturing remains an important industry, today’s residents can seek out occupations in a number of other burgeoning sectors, such as technology and healthcare.

A Team for Every Sports Fan

Detroit may be known for its industrial history, but the modern Motor City is just as celebrated for its stacked roster of professional sports. As the home of the Detroit Lions (NFL), Detroit Tigers (MLB), Detroit Red Wings (NHL), and Detroit Pistons (NHL), there’s always a buzz in the city as fans gather to catch exciting games.

Urban Green Spaces

Detroit boasts various urban recreation spaces, like the miles of pathways along the Riverwalk and the lush, well-maintained landscapes of Belle Isle Park. These natural spaces beautify the city and provide a better quality of life for residents seeking opportunities to walk, cycle, run, swim, and explore.

What to Consider Before Relocating

It’s not uncommon for travelers to find themselves drawn to their destinations long after they’ve returned home, but one cannot judge a locale solely based on a vacation experience. There are factors to be mindful of that may require more preparation and compromise before scheduling an appointment with the movers.

Choosing a Neighborhood

Choosing a property is one thing, but finding a neighborhood that suits you, your lifestyle, and your family’s needs is a completely different challenge. Fortunately, Detroit has a wide range of communities offering something unique for prospective homebuyers.

Those wanting to be at the heart of Detroit’s thriving arts and culture scene should check out properties located in Midtown. Home to galleries, theaters, music venues, and more, this busy neighborhood always has something exciting going on.

Prospective buyers interested in owning a historical home should explore Corktown, a neighborhood renowned for its rich history, industrial feel, and lush green spaces. From large family homes to quaint cottages, this neighborhood offers a dynamic residential landscape suited to a variety of real estate clients.

Families may want to look to the city’s suburbs for a quieter place to raise a family. Birmingham, for example, boasts a close-knit community, friendly locals, fantastic amenities, and easy access to great schools.

Local Tax Rates & Insurance Considerations

Moving somewhere new inevitably requires becoming familiar with a new tax system and unique financial considerations. The city of Detroit levies a 2.4% income tax rate on residents in addition to Michigan’s 4.25% income tax. Furthermore, residents need to be aware that insurance premiums are higher than the national average, owing to factors such as the freezing winters experienced in the city. Working with a tax professional and financial adviser can help you understand the specific costs you can expect when relocating to the Motor City.

Motor City Living Beckons

Detroit is a modern mecca for entrepreneurs and innovators, creating a diversified economic foundation upon which the metro and its residents flourish. Urban green spaces, close-knit communities, and a thriving downtown attract families, retirees, and young professionals looking for a new home in the Midwest’s most exciting city.
